Recent reports exposed what Republicans, in Congress, think of Trump. In public, though, they either support him or at least are vague about disagreeing with him; in private they say they hate him, don’t trust him and see him as a threat to the nation or at the very least their party. They won’t openly oppose him because they fear the alternative.
I’ve said it before, but let that sink in and think about it for a moment. What, in heaven’s name, could possibly be worse than Donald Trump in the Oval Office? As far as they’re concerned, it’s a Democrat.
Here’s where they lose me. I truly wish a Republican would explain it to me. Mind you, I used to be a Republican.
I admired what the party stood for, that is, fiscal responsibility, self responsibility, the land of opportunity, a small lean government rather than a bloated bureaucracy and taxes that made sense. Of course, today, Republicans stand for none of those ideals, which is why I left the party.
As a former GOPer I ask the simple question: what of a Democrat in the White House is so terrifying? Seriously, please, explain this to me. What in the world could a Democrat do that is worse than Bunker Boy Donald?
Let’s look back and not too far, mind you. How were things under Obama? Now, he was called a Kenyan-born socialist and communist bent on taking over one-sixth of the American economy, installing Death Panels, setting up FEMA Re-Education Camps, invading Texas, taking our guns, making himself an imperial president and leaving our diplomats in Benghazi to die.
Oh, and Obama also didn’t deserve any credit for getting bin Laden. Did I miss anything? Yet, are we are living in a country where none of those things came to pass.
What is it President Biden might do that is horrific? What could he do that is worse than the Great Orange? What could be better than a party, mostly in power, which does nothing?
Well, let’s consider a few possibilities. A Democrat in the White House might raise taxes on the rich to bring down the deficit and pay for healthcare or infrastructure re-building. Amazon last year paid no taxes, its owner, Jeff Bezos, might become the first trillionaire, but his employees toil under brutal, almost sweatshop conditions.
A Democratic president might have more Blacks and other minorities in his or her administration to advance their rights. Considering the protests and near riots taking place across the country, maybe looking out for those people is an idea. Also, I should like to know how would that negatively affect you?
What minorities, treated as equals, somehow infringes on your rights? A Hispanic woman on a court bench is a threat to your physical safety? In a recent ruling, a Trump appointee to the Supreme Court voted in favour of LGBT rights. How would a justice, appointed by a Democrat, would be worse?
Are you worried that another Apology Tour will take place? What, kowtowing to Putin, sucking up to the Saudis and playing nice with Kim, of North Korea, is somehow dealing from a position of strength? Considering Trump mostly alienated most American allies, maybe a couple of apologies are in order.
What of the LGBTQ community? How does two men kissing in public or a lesbian couple with their child in the park affect or effect your life? Yet, a bunch of gun-toting yahoos threatening people doesn’t worry you a bit.
What of immigrants? Yes, I know, Republicans think immigrants are lazy, will steal your job and spoil your women. What a neat double play is that.
Yet, Republicans are okay with immigrant children in cages, even if some of them die. Yet, you believe a President Biden will what, throw the borders open and allow immigrants to overrun our country? I’m not sure of the calculus here.
Over the course of eight years Obama and Biden helped build our economy into a powerhouse. How many millions of people are now unemployed? The stock market is doing great I’ll admit, I don’t know about you, but I haven’t received any dividend checks.
When Biden was VP, the administration dealt with several viral outbreaks. Our nation got through them. Can you honestly say Trump has triumphed over coronavirus?
Again, I ask, and honestly want an answer: What of a Democrat in the White House is so terrifying to you?
Combining the gimlet-eye of Philip Roth with the precisive mind of Lionel Trilling, AJ Robinson writes about what goes bump in the mind, of 21st century adults. Raised in Boston, with summers on Martha's Vineyard, AJ now lives in Florida. Working, again, as an engineeer, after years out of the field due to 2009 recession and slow recovery, Robinson finds time to write. His liberal, note the small "l," sensibilities often lead to bouts of righteous indignation, well focused and true. His teen vampire adventure novel, "Vampire Vendetta," will publish in 2020. Robinson continues to write books, screenplays and teleplays and keeps hoping for that big break.
